Description: |
QTTX 130650 was in a string of cars at CN yard, former GB&W McDonald Yard, at North Green Bay, WI on 24 Sep. '14. It is a 330-ton, 12-axle, 32' deck, depressed center flat car; BLT 04-00; Plate C; LD LMT 655000 lbs.; LT WT 280000; length 107'-7 1/4"; loading deck length 32'-0"; loading deck height 2'-10". The load is a GE Prolec Autotransformer. An interesting warning decal, depicted in the next photograph, was affixed to the load. If some of the other cars in the string offer any indication, it looks like it might be heading north on an E&LS train in the near future. |

The large open area north of the Pembine Union Depot is used for storing and loading logs on the E&LS, former MILW, siding on the left, as seen at Pembine, WI on 30 Sep. '14. The rails in the foreground are the interchange track; the rails on the other side of the remnants of the passenger platform are the CN, former SOO, rails. The depot sits at the junction of these two lines (out of frame to the left). |

Not sure where train originated, but it was headed for Goodman, WI. Gasset Rd. is a remnant of the Dunbar & Wausaukee right of way, which formed a junction with the SOO just out of frame to the left. The depot was built by the SOO ca. 1887, a photograph of the depot and the junction can be found at: http://www.midcontinent.org/imagedb/postcard_detail.php?record_id=411. Supposedly the depot was moved to Laona where it is used by the Lumberjack Steam Train. The well-groomed ATV/snowmobile trail used to be Depot Rd. |

CN local emerges from the forest into a small clearing as it hauls 9 cars northeast via the former SOO rails at Kremlin, WI on 1 Oct. '14. Train was heading back to MI after servicing Specialty Granules, Inc. (SGI) at Kremlin and setting out 24 cars for the E&LS at Pembine, WI. The train is starting to descend a long grade down to the bridge over the Menominee River. I don't know the percentage of the gradient, but it appears quite a bit steeper than average (not so much here but closer to the river). |

Buried Diamond at Waupaca, WI |
Description: |
An almost invisible reminder of when there was much more rail activity here, a nearly buried diamond amidst the CN, former SOO and GB&W, rails at Waupaca, WI on 4 Oct. '14. The spur coming down from the main line and heading out of frame to the left leads to Waupaca Foundry, Plant 1. The spur heading out of frame at bottom center, as well as the still active spur, ran past the SOO freight depot, which still stands, to numerous rail customers that existed before Waupaca Foundry began, as well as toward the GB&W line into town. The still existing spur and the nearly buried spur curving off to the right lead to an industrial area at the intersection of Oborn St. and Ware St. which no longer receives rail service. The spur that angles off to the lower right crossed Balch St. and paralleled Hibbard St. Looking west from the intersection of Hibbard St. and Balch St. |

Description: |
SOO 0-6-0 No. 321 on display at Pinecrest Historical Village in Town of Manitowoc Rapids, Manitowoc Co., WI on 7 Oct. '14. Built as MSSM&A No. 38 by Rhode Island Locomotive Works in Oct. 1887; renumbered SOO No. 321 after MStP&SSM was formed. Later modified as 0-6-0T and renumbered X90 (side tanks added in lieu of the original tender) and assigned as shop switcher at SOO's Shoreham Shops at Minneapolis, MN. At some point after it was retired it underwent cosmetic restoration to its original tender configuration. It is the oldest surviving SOO steam locomotive and 1 of 3 remaining SOO 0-6-0s, unless the internet is lying. In addition to the historic photograph of this locomotive on this website, another can be found at: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/soo/soo-x90dsa.jpg. WC caboose WC 99006 and an unlabeled flatcar are partially visible behind the locomotive. The SOO Collins, WI depot is partially visible on the right. |

WC 1571 and WC 1570 |
Description: |
A pair of sequentially numbered WC cows, WC 1571 and WC 1570, work the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 14 Oct. '14. That can’t happen everyday. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. |

An ancient grade crossing at the intersection of a trail with the CN, former SOO rails, near Milepost 328 in the Navarino Wildlife Area, Town of Navarino, Shawano Co., WI on 11 Oct. '14. Years ago it was a primitive road but now it is mostly a hiking trail, the gate at the trailhead is normally closed to prevent motorized vehicle traffic. Vehicles can no longer (easily) cross here, the railroad ties and gravel that facilitated the crossing have been removed, relatively recently, but the old crossbucks and whistle posts remain (the train still sounds its horn too). |

Commercial St. as Neenah Milk Products, Galloway took it over in 1955. The facility has been expanded over the old right of way since the rails were pulled up. When was the last time new rails were laid in the area? |

IC 910090, et al. |
Description: |
Several CN MoW flatcars spotted alongside the SCA Tissue warehouse at Shawano Junction in the Town of Menasha, WI on 3 Nov. '14. SCA does not currently receive rail service, so it has been quite a few years since railroad freight cars have been spotted on this spur. Obviously it would be much more interesting if there were revenue cars spotted here, but beggars can’t be choosers. |
