Description:
Built by Baldwin in 1948 for the Central RR of New Jersey, this model was the 1500 hp "Babyface" similar to the EMD E & F units as compared to the other body style, the distinctive "Sharknose" model. An unknown photographer caught #77 in the Jersey City Terminal Yard with the unit showing some overall wear.

Here is the front cover of a nine-page cover article by Jerry A. Pinkepank entitled "On Behalf Of Baldwin." It was published originally on the December 1967 issue of "Trains" magazine. Cover Caption: "Horse Shoe action, J.J. Young, Jr.; Baldwin 6001, H.L. Broadbelt Collection." Pictured at the bottom of the page is #6001, an A-B-B-A demonstrator set of DR-4-4-1500 engines built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in June of 1949. This set was first owned by the Elgin, Joliet, & Eastern Railroad, but ended up eventually on the Baltimore & Ohio.

PRR DR-4-4-1500 9570
Description:
PRR DR-4-4-1500 9570 across from EMD at La Grange, Illinois on November 15, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1949 (c/n 73701), one of 34 DR-4-4-1500 "Sharknose" A units numbered in the 9568A - 9593A and 9700A - 9707A number series. Previous to the PRR order, Baldwin's DR-4-4-1500 was delivered in the "baby face" carbody style. The PRR's initial order of 26 A-units and 26 B-units were delivered in 1949, and a follow-up order for eight A-B sets was placed in 1949 for 1950 delivery. These last eight units introduced yet another refinement; the cab was moved one foot forward, with a corresponding reduction in the length of the nose. Number 9570 is seen here on its last mile, on the Pielet Brothers setout track across the IHB main from EMD's plant in La Grange.

Wye Switchds. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train at the Wye Switches in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 1 August 1962. Shown here (L to R) are engines #9574 and #2008. Both were built by the BaldwiQ Locomotive Works. #9574 is a BF-15 built in March of 1949. rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in December of 1963. #2008 is a BF-16 built in October of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in July of.1966. These two Baldwin "Sharks" and N-5 cabin car # 477719 have just come from East Altoona. They are about to cross US Route 22, after which they will stop and back into the Hollidaysburg Yards, pick-up a freight train, and then head up the New Portage Branch to Gallitzin and points West.

Good Day. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad property in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 25 July 1960. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #9581, #9589-B, and #9706. All were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and are rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9581 and 9589-B are BF-15's built in 1949, but #9706 is a BF-15A built in 1950. These locomotives are in the process of backing-up to couple onto the train they will pull up the New Portage Branch Line via the Muleshoe Curve. This photo was taken near the Yard Master's Office, at the very eastern end of South Juniata Street. The PRR's Samuel Rea Shop is in the background. Also visible are the wooden water tower (the last vestige of the "Age of Steam"), as well as several all-steel passenger cars on their way to be scrapped at the PRR's Reclamation Plant in Frankstown. #6 of 12.

"Horseshoe Curve," Page 6, 2006
Description:
Here is a photo by Gary R. Zuters. It was included in a 24-page booklet entitled "World Famous Horseshoe Curve" that was published in 2006 by The Railroad Press, page 6. Partial Caption: "The Baldwin Locomotive Works of Eddystone, Pennsylvania, called them RF-15's, but the rest of the world called them 'Sharknoses' for obvious reasons. Here, a perfectly matched set of A-B-A sharks led by class unit #9700 is thundering uphill with a freight in April 1959." Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #9700 and two more "BF" Class units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by Baldwin. #9700 is a BF-15A built in April of 1950, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in February of 1965 after just 15 years of revenue service.

Description:
Oil Power. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of (L to R) Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9701 and a "Shark" B-unit whose road number is not recorded. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #9701 is a BF-15A constructed in April of 1950, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in February of 1965 after just 15 years of revenue service. The photographer's name, the exact date, and the location are not recorded.

Description:
4th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 September 1964. Shown here are PRR engines #9739, #2008-B, and #9701. All were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #9739 and #2008-B are BF-16's built in 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower each. #9701 is a BF-15A built in 1950 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. They are stopped just short of the 4th Street Bridge, awaiting orders to pull a mixed-cargo freight train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Visible on the right is Altoona's one-track loading and unloading facility for TrucTrain flatcars. Photo taken from the 4th Street Bridge.

Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, on 13 September 1958. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9705, an unidentified Baldwin-built "B" unit, and #9737. #9705 is a BF-15A built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in May of 1950, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in May of 1965. #9737 is a BF-16 constructed by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in May of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966. They're about to pass under the State Route 53 Bridge with a train of empty hoppers bound for the coal mines of Western Pennsylvania. William E. Burket Collection.

12th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 24 September 1962. Shown here are PRR engines #2005, #9705-B, and #9724. All were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #2005 and #9724 are BF-16's built in 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower each. #9705-B is a BF-15A built in 1950 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. They are stopped in front of the Altoona Passenger Station, while the crew awaits permission to proceed up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West..
