PRR 2-8-2 #1374 - Pennsylvania RR |
Description: |
This is an example from the 574 "Mikado" type locomotives built by PRR between 1914-1917. A member of the L1s class, it had 62" drivers, developed 205 psi boiler pressure for fts 27"x30" cylinders (diameter and stroke). Similar parts were used for these Mikados as were used in the famous class K-4 Pacifics - identical boilers and the same Belpaire firebox as well as many other mechanical parts - thus making repairs much easier. Warren W. McCleary Jr photo credit. |

Description: |
Here is a PRR Pacific loco built in the PRR Juniata shops in 1918. The photo had a lengthy personal note on the back - "Culver, IN. Dear Dad, As you know, have inherited the old South Bend Branch and have been to So, Bend, Lakeville, La Paz Jct, Hibbard and am now here at Culver. Been thinking about you all day & here is the old train you used to run. Wish you were along, Love, Tom" The author is referring to the South Bend Branch that was originally part of the Vandalia RR, then Pennsylvania RR. Under Penn Central and Conrail, the line was eventually abandoned between South Bend and Logansport. It used to carry large shipments of Studebaker automobiles from South Bend and was famous for its doodlebug passenger service. Specifics - K-4s class, tall 80" drivers, 205 psi boiler pressure, 27x28" cylinders, engine weight of 304,500 lb, tractive effort of 44,460 lb. It could run fast, steam easily, ride well, and, despite its rather large size for a Mikado, it was economical to operate." PRR 4-4-0 #1035 |
Description: |
Beautiful original photo of an Altoona built 4-4-0 American type steam locomotive. On#the back of the photo it lists this as a 1905 (D16sb class) as the build date but online sources point more to 1907-14. Nevertheless, the unknown photographer captured a great example of an early locomotive. With Mark Coles' help (see comment below), this loco was built as a class D16b in December 1905 by the PRR's Juniata Shops in Altoona. She was converted to class D16sb in October 1915 in the PRR's!Trenton Shops. You can see a picture of her surviving Builders Plates and Numberplate here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/lrmyers/16649708649/in/album-72157649056433924/. |
