NJT GG1 #4877 - New Jersey Transit
This beautiful GG1 led a very productibe and interesting life. Built by GE and the PRR Altoona Shops in January of 1939 as PRR #4877, it served the Pennsy for many years pulling passengers at speeds of 100 mph. The once proud GG1 then bounced through the ill-fated Penn Central years and then onto the Conrail roster after the PC collapse. It next served in New Jersey commuter servce (NJDOT>NJT) unitl final retirement on October 29, 1983. In 1991, NJT donated it to the United RR Historical Society of New Jersey (URHS). It is stored in the Boonton Yards awaiting its new home in the future New Jersey Transportation Heritage Center. An unknown rail fan too this photo of Big Red at its celebration party.
