Locomotives at work
North Platt, Nebraska, June 18, 2022, 11:36 a.m. Locomotives at work: Mother-slug set UPY 328 and UPY 428 are pulling a freight car east through Bailey Yard. Mother UPY 328 was built as an SD40-2 in September 1978. Slug UPY 428 is a former Electromotive Diesel SD38-2 built in December 1973. The engine, alternator, and compressor have been removed, and the fuel tanks have been removed and filled with concrete to add tractive adhesion to the driving wheels. Electrical power for the driving wheels and air pressure for the brakes are provided by the mother UPY 328. Slug UPY 428 still has all its functional controls, and the train engineer can use it as the lead locomotive at the front of a train. UP 3998 was built by Electromotive Diesel in August 1994 as Southern Pacific Railroad SP 9823.
