The GE U50s lived one of the shortest lives of any mainline road locomotive. The were all retired after just seven years of service. The GE U50s were plagued with electrical and mechanical problems. Several major changes were made to the U50 including the rerouting of primary wiring, replacing aluminum wiring with copper wiring, and the installation of heat sensors to react to high wire temperatures. As a result, all U50s were sidelined and all of them were sold to Erman Corporation (Turner, KS) for scrap.

A correction to my previous statement: All GE U50s were sold to Erman Corporation for scrap between May 1977 and June 1978, with the exception of UP 5005 which was scrapped by UP at Omaha, NE August 1977.
