Description:
A NY Subway fantrip took a set of BMT A-B cars to, among other places, Stilwell Av, the Coney Island terminus of several lines. We had come in on the N-Sea Beach, one of the more interesting lines in the system.

Head end
Description:
The excursion train had come in off the N-Sea Beach line, with this being the head end. It will return via the Brighton Line, retaining its positon as leader. The R 32 cars on the adjacent track numbered over 600, and were the workhorses of the B Division. I dont recall the track assignments of that era, but the B-West End line got those cars on most every train, so Im thinking thats the line next to us. This station also served the D, M, and QB trains via the Brighton Line, and the F on the Mc Donald Av line, which had been an IND route south of Church Av since 1954.

Title:
Culver line
Description:
This view is taken from an F train bound for Coney Island, looking west on the remains of the Culver Line, which left the West End Line(B train) at 9th Av and 39th St, going to Mc Donald Av, then turning south to reach Coney Island. As the IND system expanded, parts of the old Brooklyn Rapid Transit were modified or abandoned, and the new subways incorporated. In this case, the IND line to Church Av was extended via a ramp from the subway to the Mc Donald Av elevated line, and the BMT portion was cut, leaving a shuttle that ran from 9th Av to a connection with the F line at Ditmas Av, out of the photo to the left. The shuttle lasted from 1954, when the IND line was connected to the former BMT, to 1976, when it was replaced by buses. As I recall, low ridership and structural issues on the remaining elevated line doomed it.

R 27s on the D train
Description:
The D train during the mid 1970s usually had some of the newest cars assigned to it, mostly R42s, and by 1977, R 46s. R 27s were really uncommon, though, as this photo at 34th St and 6th Av shows, rush hours can make for some strange assignments. A train of R 27s, usually found on the BMTs J, M, and RR trains, pulls away as it picks up speed for a fast run to W 4th St.

Title:
High point
Description:
The highest station on the NYCTA is this one, Smith St and 9th Av on the IND line to Church Av and Coney Island, at 87 6" above the street. During non rush hours, it was the end of the line for the GG-it continued on to Church Av in rush hour, making the local stops while the F ran express. We see a GG leaving for its trip to Forest Hills in Queens with a set of R 40s, the famous slant nose cars. Up til recently, this line got some of the oldest cars in the system, often R1/9s, some of them R 3A and R 4 cars dating to the late 1930s. As the R 46s came on line starting in 1975, the older cars were retired, and the GG finally got some newer equipment such as these, which were hand me downs from the E and F trains, where they were captive for most of the previous decade.

R 11
Description:
One of the odder cars the NYCTA had was a set of ten R 11s. These were of aluminum construction, built in 1948 to test how the aluminum bodies and parts would hold up. They didnt do as well as the Transit Authority hoped, and they became orphans. By the time I was riding the trains regularly in the mid 1970s, there were four of them left, running on the Franklin Av Shuttle, from Prospect Park on the Brighton Line, to Fulton St, where it connected to the IND A train on the Fulton St subway. Transfer was by taking a paper ticket from a dispenser, then going to the other line, where you dropped the ticket in a fare box. This lasted til the Franklin Av train was replaced by buses, I think in the late 70s. This car is seen at the Transit Museum in the old IND Court St station in Brooklyn.

R 36
Description:
This is the interior of one of the Flushing Lines R36 cars. They were delivered just ahead of the 1964/65 Worlds Fair in a unique blue and gray scheme. Most cars were married pairs, with a group of singles to accommodate the 11 car trains that ran on the line. This is one of the singles, 9306 at the Transit Museum. The interior is much like any other IRT car of the era.

R 46
Description:
One of the lines that got the new R 46 cars was the N, unusual since the BMT tended to be the poor stepchild of the B Division when it came to car assignments. The IND got all the new cars, with the BMT mostly getting hand me downs that had come off the prime runs. Nonetheless, the N was assigned some of the new cars, one of which we see here during its layover time at 57 St and 7th Av. The interiors, like those of the R 44s that immediately preceded these, was a departure from the longitudinal seating of the cars of the 50s and 60s.

Title:
Queensboro Plaza
Description:
This view of the Queensboro Plaza station was taken from the LI City municipal parking garage. The station here is unique in that it serves both incompatible divisions in the same structure. The IRT Flushing Line uses the south side of the station, and the BMT line to Ditmars Blvd the north side. The station is two levels, with the tracks for each line above each other: the northbound BMT track is above the southbound, likewise for the IRT. It is one of the few places trains can move from one division to the other, allowing otherwise captive Flushing trains to get on the rest of the system. This is not a problem for the IRT cars, since their 9 foot width allows them to go anywhere. The reverse is a problem, since IND and BMT cars are 10 feet wide, and wont fit the stations on the IRT, as well as some of the tunnels. The BMT line here now uses the 60th St tunnel to access the station from Manhattan. Trains started using the tunnel in the teens, but up til the early 1950s, trains also continued over the 59th St Bridge to reach the 2nd Av elevated line. There was one great thing about waiting for a train here. Up til shortly before this photo was taken, Silvercup Bakeries had a plant here, and the aroma of baking bread could be inhaled all around the area. I miss those round loaves!!

R 10
Description:
Believe it or not, the move to R 10s was an improvement for this line. The CC was a rush hour only train that ran from Bedford Park Blvd in the Bronx to Rockaway Park. I often wondered if a train ever made it all the way from one end to the other before the rush hour expired. It was the exception to the rule that the IND got the new cars, and the BMT got the hand me downs. This train got R1/9s almost all the time, though once in a while there would be a set of R 10s, such as these. When the R1/9s were retired, these cars were moved off the A train to the CC. They were the last group on the B Division to have air operated doors, with the conductor standing between cars to operate them. They were already 30 years old by the time I got this photo at 8th Av and 42 St.

Queens Boulevard
Description:
This is a view of a #7 train arriving at 40th/Lowery St on the IRT Flushing Line, on the concrete viaduct above Queens Blvd in Sunnyside. The cars were delivered in 1963, replacing Low-Vs just ahead of the 1964/65 Worlds Fair in Flushing Meadow. They would serve on this line for 40 years.

Patriotic colors
Description:
A set of the normally green and white CTA cars has been painted for the Bicentennial. Now two years after the big celebration, quite a few cars still carried their festive paint schemes, such as this set on Lake St. I found it interesting that CTA was running two car trains. In New York, where I lived, they never ran anything shorter than four cars, which alleviated the problem of a train getting "stranded" going through a gap in third rail access while negotiating switches.

Title:
Wont see this on many subway lines
Description:
There are a number of grade crossings on the CTA, on Congress St line. Coming from New York(which, oddly, had one on the Canarsie Line, the LL train, at the time) where such things are unheard of, I found it interesting that there would be not one, but several, on this line. Even more amazing, given the lines urban character, are the cattle guards. Im thinking they were installed a long time ago, when the area may have been more agricultural, and just never removed.

Train watchers paradise
Description:
If you liked passenger trains, this was one of the best spots you could find. It was the newly completed "Northwest Passage," a connection from the Lake St L train to the CNW station. It was the best of all possible worlds: E and F unit powered commuter trains in the station, and L trains overhead, such as the one crossing the station throat on the Lake St line overhead.

Long platform
Description:
There is a section of the Dearborn St subway that runs through most of downtown where the platform is continuous for about a half mile. Trains run along it, stopping only at designated locations. Im at Monroe, and theres still a long way to go.

Coming in from 33rd St
Description:
PATH-the Port Authority Trans Hudson-runs the former PRR Hudson and Manhattan trains. The line is surface from Newark to Jersey City, then goes underground to reach what was oringinally Hudson Terminal, now the World Trade Center, in Manhattan, and also a line to Hoboken, and to 33rd St and 6th Av in New York. Trains from 33rd St run to either Hoboken or Journal Square, which is where we are seeing this train, just coming in from 33rd St. Trains from WTC run through here to Newark Penn Station. This train is made up of older equipment. After the PATH takeover in the 1960s, newer cars were acquired to augment this fleet, which dates to PRR operations.

The newer cars used on the Market St line had these rooftop air vents along the length of the car. The lumpy appearance gained them the nickname "Almond Joys" since they resembled the popular candy bar. A train of them is at 69th st.

Description:

Description:
One of the more obscure transit operations in the Garden State is the Newark City Subway, which runs to the west side of the city from Penn Station. When I rode in 1980, they were still using PCC cars. This is the first one, seen at the end of the line.

Description:

Title:
Not quite as old
Description:
A train of mid 50s built R 27s aprroaches one of the Rockaway Line stations. This was one of two trains I caught that day. Its not quite as old as the other one, which had R 10s. The line here was once part of the LIRR, reached via two routes. The main route was via a junction with the LIRR Main Line at Rego Park, which ran south through Woodhaven and Howard Beach. It crossed Jamaica Bay on a wood pile trestle, which was a constant maintenance headache. The last straw was a fire in 1950. The LIRR sold it to NYCTA, which rebuilt it as a concrete causeway. The LIRR Rockaway Line was cut back to Woodhaven, and finally abandoned in 1962. The other route is still in service via Valley Stream, though the through route was cut so the LIRR Far Rockaway station is about four blocks from the IND station.

Lake-Dan Ryan train
Description:
As we arrive in Chicago on the Lake Cities, at the time a Toledo-Chicago train via Detroit-unfortunately, not the EL streamliner-we pass over the Dan Ryan Expressway, where an inbound train is heading towards the Loop. Saturday traffic is not too bad. Most of the time, the trains outpace the cars handily.

Im an east coast guy. I have a pretty good idea of the history of most of the eastern systems, and their equipment. The west?? Not much. I recall when BART was opened, almost 50 years ago, and the slant nose cars that ran there. I cant imagine these are the same cars, despite the tendency of rapid transit cars to run seemingly forever. In any case, these look pretty good.

We went to the west coast in 2015 to see some of the parks, drive up the coast, and see some old friends. A friend of my wife lived in Walnut Creek, in a condo right across the street from BART. Our last day there, as we were getting set up to head out, I took some shots of the local transit operation. A train of Alstom built "C" cars approaches the Walnut Creek station.
