Viewing Album: Northeast WI, Spring 2018
By:
T. P. Bruss
Dates:
3/20/2018 - 6/20/2018
Album Info:
Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2018, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

Title:
CN 2400 and Ferrocarril Mexicano (Feromex) FXE 4687
Description:
CN through freight, assisted by an interesting foreign visitor, parallels Hwy. 41 as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Snells, WI on 20 Mar. '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. I do not know if each railroad had their own small depot, or if one small depot served both railroads, I suspect it was the latter. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, can be seen on this side of the train.

CP 8828 and CREX 1504
Description:
An interesting foreigner leads a through freight as it approaches S. Perkins St. while headed northeast through the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 24 Mar. '18. Train had two locomotives, CP 8828 and CREX 1504. There is a spur along the south side of the facility at right, but the turnout was removed years ago. The oldest part of the building was completed in Mar. '60, the new facility for the Fox Valley Sheltered Workshop. Inc. (started in '55 to create employment opportunities for the disabled). It became Valley Packaging Industries Inc. ca. mid- or late-'80s. After they moved to a new facility, this one has been home to Valley Planing Mill, Inc., followed by Perfect Patterns, Inc., and most recently as extra warehouse space for All About Packaging, Inc.

CSX 98
Description:
A unit train of 3-bay covered hoppers, powered by an interesting visitor from out-of-town, rests on the CN, former C&NW, siding along W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. at Stroebe, WI on 27 Mar. '18. I rarely see through freights with locomotives running long hood forward, so I thought this locomotive was at the tail end of the train. Then I noticed the crew in the cab and discovered that there was no locomotive at the other end. The former SOO main line is visible at right. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)).

CN 3034 and CN 3002
Description:
A CN container train crosses over from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails as it heads southwest at Neenah, WI on 30 Mar. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 3034 and CN 3002. Components for a new turnout rest at left. Given that the sun light was neutral, I was hoping to photograph a train approaching Kampo Rd. from the northeast on the main line, for a change. That angle isn't be much good on a sunny afternoon, when I am usually over this way. I positioned myself here when I noticed a train approaching, only to be foiled once again by the crafty crew members of the CN (who decided to cross over to the passing siding instead).

CN 4711 and CN 9530
Description:
A CN local crosses W. 2nd St. as it departs the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 5 Apr. '18. Train originated in Neenah, dropped off a string of cars here, and is now headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, a small, old, rail side tavern, stands at right. It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the '90s and Pete's Junction (possibly Palomino Pete's Junction) ca. the '70s.

CN local approaches Stroebe Rd. as it heads southwest via former SOO rails with 14 cars at Stroebe, WI on 5 Apr. '18. Train was on its way back to Neenah from Shawano. Locomotive is passing an awesome, old, wooden crossbuck which guards the currently unused spur for Great Northern Corp. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The former C&NW rails are in the foreground.

Wisely erring on the side of caution when they noticed the far signals activate, they realized that there was plenty of room to safely wait here until the local passed by. The Great Northern Corp. facility is partially visible in the background.

CN 2823, et al.
Description:
A CN unit train of tank cars approaches N. Lake St. as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 10 Apr. '18. Train had three locomotives, CN 2823, CN 287x, CN 2978. The boxcar at left waits to spotted at Eggers Industries. The boxcars at right rest in a small ancillary yard behind Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16). A man in a conspicuity vest is visible between the two cuts of cars at right. His behavior was quite odd. He was doing something near the coupler of NOKL 600005, the car to his left, until he noticed the train approaching. Then he moved to the side of the boxcar and crouched down. I did not notice him after the train cleared the grade crossing.

CN 2895
Description:
A CN container train passes the Main St. overpass and the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot on the west leg of the wye at the north end of the yard at Neenah, WI on 10 Apr. '18. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties (near the center of the photograph) rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Train had two locomotives, CN 2895, CN 3076.

A CN container train passes Arrowhead Park as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 10 Apr. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 2895, CN 3076. The Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp. and International Children's Fund, is partially visible background right. [The facility has undergone numerous name changes in its long history, but if one were to pick a generic and historic name for it, it would need to be Neenah Stove Works because that is what it was referred to for so many years, through several changes in ownership. The second most common generic reference would be the Neenah foundry, because for many years it was the only foundry in Neenah, but obviously that could cause confusion today.]

An interesting trio of foreigners lead a unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers approaching Dixie Rd. while headed southwest along the CN, former SOO, rails at Town of Vinland, Winnebago Co., WI on 12 Apr. '18. Train had three locomotives, NS 8077, BNSF 4162, BNSF 9061. The CN completed some significant brush clearing here about a month ago. The large patch of white gravel is a spot that has been recently leveled off in preparation for some upcoming work. I'm standing where the former C&NW right-of-way used to cross the road. Part of the former C&NW main line forms a long passing siding, sometimes referred to as Dixie Siding, at right.
