Album Info: | Here is an eight-page article by Mr. Fred Westing entitled "The Great Days of Steam and the Glory of Pennsy Pacifics." It was published originally in the March 1965 issue of "Railroad" magazine, pages 21-28, and includes 15 photos from various sources.
Mr. Westing writes that "This need [for more tractive power] was especially urgent on the Pittsburgh Division, the Pennsy's locomotive testing ground. Double-heading was too frequent; more power per locomotive unit was the answer. By 1914, it had become clear that heavy Atlantics ~ superb as they were on the moderate grades ~ were not at their best on the hilly Pittsburgh Division. The time was ripe for a new Pacific."
