Not management |
Description: |
Riders on the LIRR often complained about the way the railroad was run, especially when things went wrong. Most were unaware of the logistics of keeping an operation that ran over 700 trains every day going. They referred to the people running tha railroad in many ways, sometimes even as turkeys. Here we see the real thing, caught while I was waiting for RF 63 near Riverhead. |

Lone outpost |
Description: |
The Main Line has some stations that seemed to be neither here nor there, and not well patronized. One such was Republic, which was once the site of a large aircraft plant. It was adjacent to NY 110, the main drag running across the Island from Huntington to Amityville, and a busy place by the 1980s, with many businesses and employers along its length, especially in the area around Melville. Yet, the LIRR handled relatively few passengers here, perhaps due to the dearth of train service in the diesel era, and a lack of good connecting public transportation. This evening rush train to Ronkonkoma is making its stop here, only a few will get off. |

One of a few |
Description: |
A Ronkonkoma train, one of only a few to make the Republic stop, slows for the platform during the evening rush. Evidence of the upcoming electrification is apparent. The third rail is already in place, but will not be energized for another year or so, and the structure for the signals at an interlocking yet to be built is overhead, awaiting the new position lights. The old signal is showing a stop in the distance. |

FA rolls west |
Description: |
An FA leads this inbound Ronkonkoma train. The unit number is stenciled on the nose, another of the many variations of the LIRR paint scheme. The station at Farmingdale, seen at right in the background, was an attractive brick structure that seemed too big for the ridership the station handled. The electrification project is well along here, with a new high level platform and third rail installed, and a new signal bridge for a yet to be installed interlocking. |

FA to Oyster Bay |
Description: |
An Oyster Bay train takes to the branch, this FA trailing, as was common in those days. Former "zip" car 2716 is first out behind the FA. These were originally MP 75's, acquired for the 1964/65 World's Fair, and were painted in the blue with orange stripe scheme, lettered "Your steel thruway to the Fair gateway." They were converted to diesel hauled cars after the M 1's arrived between 1968 and 72. There were a few that still had their lit nuberboards on the side, even at this late date. |

Big station |
Description: |
One town that had a much bigger station than seemed necessary for the traffic was Farmingdale, with its three stories and brick construction. By the 1980s, there was an agent for the morning rush, and mostly an empty building. |

Commuters rolling east |
Description: |
RF 63 has tied up in the siding at Deer Park, clearing up at the end of his day for the evening rush. Train 254 with MP 15 163 leading goes past the old Deer Park station en route to the end of its run in Ronkonkoma. The station here is no longer in use for passengers, having been supplanted by the new high level station built as part of the Ronkonkoma electrification. It will be kept for the freight crews and MOW. |
