This is a consolidation of several separate Boston & Maine steam locomotive albums posted earlier. The photos are mostly original b&w scans, some with adjustments and refinements to bring out details. The photographer, date and location are identified when known. Approximate dates and locations have been given to those without the information.

BM 4-8-2 #4106 - Boston & Maine RR
Description:
Named "Little John" in the B&M sponsored contest, this brute is similar to its namesake, a real powerhouse in disguise. Built by Baldwin in 1937 along with 17 others, the R-1 class served the B&M well through the war years. In 1947, this unit and several of its sisters were sold to the B&O and renumbered 5606. No location or photographer were listed for this photo and the date is an approximation.

BM 4-6-2 #3715 - Boston & Maine
Description:
This is one of the only 10 4-6-2 Pacifics built by Lima for the Boston & Maine. In addition, these last 10 Lima Pacifics were the last Pacifics that Lima would ever build. To commemorate these last 10, B&M held a children's naming contest. The winning name for #3715 was "Kwasind" from the "Song of Hiawatha". All the rest of the Boston & Maine's large stable of 4-6-2 Pacifics were built by Alco, nearly all of those were Schenectady locos with the exception of the DLW Brooks built locos that were purchased in 1943. Specs - serial #7655, P-4 class, 80" drivers, impressive 260 psi boiler pressure, 23x28" cylinders. No exact date, location or photographer was listed for this photo but it appears to be Boston, MA.

This is a massive Mountain-type locomotive built by Baldwin in 1935 for the Boston & Maine RR. For this class of locomotives, B&M sponsored a naming contest for each of the 18 locos built. The winning name for this one was "Oliver Wendell Holmes". Eventually this unit was sold to the B&O in 1947. Speicifics - 73" drivers, 240 psi boiler pressure, 28"x31" cylinders, engine weight of 416,100 lb, tractive effort of 67,918 lb. Long before an EMD GP40 wore the number 3244, this 1909 Alco-Manchester 4-4-2 Atlantic type steam locomotive held the number. Outfitted for snow that typically collected on the line is #3244.
